TABITHA

BEAUTIFUL SILK AND SILVER PRODUCTS FROM CAMBODIA
TABITHA CAMBODIA, a non-governmental organization, was started in themid-1990s by Canadian Janne Ritskes, who came to Cambodia because the people were indesperate shape and needed help. Focusing on the poorest of the poor, Tabitha helps themto gain skills that lead to income and savings. It has grown into an active and internationallyrecognized organization whose current programs have lifted more than a quarter of a millionCambodians out of poverty and despair into lives of dignity, hope and active participation intheir communities.
Tabitha's programs are broadly based and include drilling water wells and buildinghouses in the kampongs (villages) of Cambodia, supplying them with practical items suchas bicycles, piglets (for livestock development) and kitchen utensils, training and productdevelopment and distribution. In all programs the Cambodians must utilize their own savings aswell as support from Tabitha.
Inspired by the work of Janne Ritskes in Cambodia, people in Canada and many othercountries provide support for Tabitha’s work through donations, selling cottage industryproducts, sending house building teams, and sponsoring the drilling of wells.
The Tabitha Foundation of Canada operates under a board of directors based in Ottawa. All work in Canada is done by volunteers. Former Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jeanis a patron of Tabitha.

la mano
la mano ethical textiles was founded in 2009. We focus our work on supporting artisans who are highly marginalized and otherwise have very limited market access. Women’s cooperatives and organizations that have a broader social mandate in addition to their artisan work are prioritized, and our partners do important educational work & projects with their members and in their communities, including raising awareness on women’s and indigenous peoples’ rights, women’s health, domestic violence, environmental education, nutrition, training in the use of natural plant remedies, agriculture projects, and much more.
la mano was born of a long-standing relationship with an indigenous women’s weaving cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico – in addition to doing educational and cultural exchange projects with this cooperative, la mano endeavors to support the women’s human rights work and economic sustainability by facilitating a direct connection between the cooperative and conscious consumers in Canada.
la mano recently began working with Freeset, an initiative based in Calcutta, India that works with women who have been forced into the sex trade because of human trafficking or poverty. Due to intense stigmatization, these women have extremely limited options. Freeset enables them to develop new skills so that they can exit the sex industry by transitioning to an alternate income-generating activity. The women also receive health care, child care, pension and literacy classes.
la mano – ethical textiles is proud to partner with inspiring organizations that embody great integrity, and is delighted offer beautiful handwoven textiles and stylish handbags at Christmas at Hycroft.
