About Johnny Piano
Stride pianist “Gentleman” Johnny Piano has been playing as an amateur off and on throughout most of his life, since taking classical lessons as a child. In about 2014 he began to play professionally, focusing on the styles and repertoire that had claimed a place closest to his heart: the music of the period sometimes called the Golden Age of American Songwriting—roughly speaking, the period between the two World Wars. It was an age that saw the birth of jazz, amid the unruly excitement of the Roaring Twenties, and was the source of a great many of the songs now fondly known as “standards.”
Johnny calls his style “old time, good time piano,” and it draws on elements of ragtime, honky tonk, and boogie-woogie. Among other venues, he has been playing for several years at the Jägerhof restaurant, in North Vancouver, on weekends, where he has built up an enthusiastic following.
