Heritage Lecture – A History of Vancouver Real Estate
November 26 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
LAND OF DESTINY: A History of Vancouver Real Estate.
The history of Vancouver is closely connected with the history of real estate. Even before its incorporation in 1886, real estate was both the city’s most valuable resource and its most prominent industry. For more than a century, it has shaped virtually every aspect of Vancouver’s growth — its name, placement, most prominent streets and neighbourhoods, local landmarks and its involvement in global events like Expo 86 and the 2010 Olympics. Join author Jesse Donaldson for an illustrated lecture that will examine some of that history, beginning with the first land sales in the region, through the CPR and Vancouver Improvement Company oligopoly of the 1890s, through the housing shortages of the 1930s and 40s, and into the present. While the pressures on the market have increased over the past century, the factors shaping real estate have remained much the same.
