HER TIME: Keeping Girls Safe

Please join the Status of Women and Human Rights Committee and Detective Sandy Avelar and Detective Anisha Parhsr to raise awareness of the perils of organized crime/gang involvement and the high risk to teenage girls in our community. They are the two frontline female Gang Crime Unit partnership in Canada. Avelar is in her 21st year with the VPD. Parhar spent five years working for the provincial gang unit before join the VPD 10 years ago. They are going to speak about their volunteer work in “Her Time”, a non-profit organization they founded, which is partially funded by the Vancouver Police Foundation. “Her Time” works in conjunction with Odd Squad Productions to assist with gang prevention initiatives. the program has access to resources that will assist women with exit strategies: ie doctors, psychologists, career counselors, and additional law enforcement agencies. The detectives spend their volunteer time speaking at schools and youth groups to teens and pre-teens with the intent of demystifying the allure of the ‘gang lifestyle’.
