International Women’s Day
March 8 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm$40
The Federation Committee presents:
“The Last Suffragist Standing”
5:30 – 8:30 p.m. (Includes buffet dinner at 6:00 p.m.)
We are pleased to have as our speaker, Veronica Strong-Boag, Member of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, professor emerita in social justice and educational studies at UBC, and winner of numerous awards and prizes for her work. As general editor of the seven-volume series entitled Women’s Suffrage and the Struggle for Democracy launched by UBC Press in 2018, Veronica Strong-Boag presents a long over-due portrait of Canada’s political evolution. In British Columbia, for example, The University Women’s Club of Vancouver was a powerful force. The life of Laura Marshall Jamieson (1872-1964), a leader in the UWCV and the subject of Veronica’s new biography, The Last Suffragist Standing: The Life and Times of Laura Marshal Jamieson (UBC Press, 2018), further reminds us that women were never cast in a single political mould. In her talk, Veronica uncovers why the recovery of Laura Jamieson’s life story and the suffrage campaigns matter in the 21st century.
This year our International Women’s Day is especially important as we will also be celebrating the 100th year anniversary of the Canadian Federation of University Women which has led the way towards more equality for women.
Enjoy a collection of vintage clothing, accessories and artifacts will be on display covering the Victorian period (when Laura Marshall Jamieson was born), the Edwardian era when she came into her own and the post-war period when suffrage was gained in BC in 1917. In this milieu of change came the establishment of the Canadian Federation of University Women in 1919. Fashion changes throughout these periods provide a fascinating view, from a feminist perspective, of the prevailing cultural norms and how they related to the status of women in society. Fashion plate posters will also be on display.” displays by Ivan Sayers and photo displays by Cathy Barford.
