Persons Day Discussion via Zoom
October 18 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
Join fellow member and retired Bay Street Lawyer Maggie Brady as she helps us understand the intrepid women, referred to as the “Famous Five” who took the Canadian government to Court for a declaration that the term “qualified persons” (then a requirement for being named a Senator) included women. It’s hard for women of our generation to contemplate how that could ever have been an issue. The “Persons Case” contained a declaration that women in Canada were “persons” in the eyes of the law. What were people thinking at that time? Did all women in Canada become “persons” that day or were some left behind? Why did the Government of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada fight against allowing women to serve in our Senate? This session will give you an understanding of how a relatively technical argument resulted in such an historical decision, with opportunities for discussion.
All members and guests are welcome to join the Zoom meeting.
RSVP through the office by Friday, October 16 to receive the Zoom link.
