Topic: “No People Will Prosper Who Appoint a Woman to Rule over Them”: Gender and Government in Muslim Sources for the Crusading Period
The above proverb, attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, was in common circulation in Muslim society during the crusading period (11th-13th centuries CE) and was seen by many Muslim scholars of the time as an indication that political power should only be wielded by men. Yet how far does it accurately capture the attitudes prevalent in the wider Muslim society of the period? We will explore these questions, discussing the extent to which the situation was rather more nuanced than it might initially seem.
Mark your calendar for Spring Lecture Series in May – May 9 (at Hycroft), 12 (via Zoom) & 19 (at Hycroft).
