Heritage Lecture

October 29 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Hycroft, 1489 McRae Avenue
Vancouver, BC V6H 1V1 Canada

"The History and Legacy of the Vancouver Park Board."
As the Bloedel Conservatory marks its 50th anniversary, join Park Board Commissioner, John Coupar, and retired Park Board Public Affairs Manager, Terri Clark, to explore the history and legacy of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. First established in 1888 and enabled by the Vancouver Charter, the Vancouver Park Board is the only elected body of its type in Canada, setting it up for constant friction, at one time or another, with all other elected groups. That single fact has made all the difference in our character as a city. Learn about some of the long-term park plans over the years, successful and otherwise, that have sought to increase green space citywide in the face of rapid development, and the efforts of devoted Park Board employees whose work resulted in some of the globe’s most horticulturally divine green spaces and recreational pleasure grounds. The speakers will also highlight the story of the Bloedel Conservatory through five decades at the highest point of the city, including how the stage was set for its conception and development in one of Vancouver’s most beautiful open spaces, Queen Elizabeth Park.

Guests $15
Non-members $16

Vancouver, BC V6H 1V1 Canada

"The Millennials" @ Hycroft would love to invite everyone at the club to a Wine Tasting Workshop, taking place on Wednesday, October 30th at 7:00 pm in the Dining Room. The workshop will be led by the very talented, knowledgeable, and our very own Jobina Bardai, who spent six years delightfully sipping her way through the drinks industry, working with sommeliers, vineyards, restaurants, bars and distributors. She spent many years as a wine writer, where she specialized in Argentinian wines. She also loved writing reviews, as dozens of cases of wine would arrive at her doorstep!

You can read Jobina's wine and drinks articles here: http://jobinabardai.com/q/?page_id=68

Jobina will be going over the basics of tasting wines, and how to determine what wines appeal to you most so that you can experiment yourself!

The cost of the workshop is $25, which includes the wine tastings as well as a simple dinner. You will also have the opportunity to order off of the Happy Hour menu that has been extended till 7:30 pm.

Please register with the office by Friday, October 25th, 2019. Please note that the cost of $25 will still be charged for any cancellations after this date.

Heritage Lecture – A History of Vancouver Real Estate

November 26 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Hycroft, 1489 McRae Avenue
Vancouver, BC V6H 1V1 Canada

LAND OF DESTINY: A History of Vancouver Real Estate.
The history of Vancouver is closely connected with the history of real estate. Even before its incorporation in 1886, real estate was both the city’s most valuable resource and its most prominent industry. For more than a century, it has shaped virtually every aspect of Vancouver’s growth — its name, placement, most prominent streets and neighbourhoods, local landmarks and its involvement in global events like Expo 86 and the 2010 Olympics. Join author Jesse Donaldson for an illustrated lecture that will examine some of that history, beginning with the first land sales in the region, through the CPR and Vancouver Improvement Company oligopoly of the 1890s, through the housing shortages of the 1930s and 40s, and into the present. While the pressures on the market have increased over the past century, the factors shaping real estate have remained much the same.

Non-members $16
