The University Women’s Club of Vancouver is a hub of activity with over 30 member-directed interest groups that offer something for everyone. Our interest groups meet at various times throughout the week or month, sometimes incorporating meals and refreshments, with new groups forming regularly. For information on any group that appeals to you, please contact the interest group Convenor (if you’re a member) or email our Membership Recruitment and Marketing Coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org).
Members interested in starting a new interest group need only three interested members to participate in order to have suitable space at Hycroft provided. All interest groups function at no cost to the Club. The Interest Group Chair will assist any member in forming a new interest group.
BOOK GROUP – meets on the second Tuesday of the month to discuss a book (fiction or non-fiction) which is read by members the previous month.
MONDAY MORNING BRIDGE – promotes fellowship and camaraderie amongst a group of women who enjoy playing the game of bridge in a relaxed and supportive environment. Meets weekly at 10 am.
MONDAY AFTERNOON BRIDGE – meets weekly at 12:30 pm for refreshments and a friendly two-hour game of bridge.
WEDNESDAY CHICAGO/DUPLICATE BRIDGE – meets weekly from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Duplicate bridge members should have some knowledge of bridge at an intermediate level. This group aims to have a fun and learn new things.
THURSDAY BRIDGE – meets weekly from 10 am to 12 pm September through June. All those with some bridge experience are welcome to attend.
BEGINNERS BRIDGE – for members who want to learn the game. Meets Sundays from 1– 2 pm. Everyone welcome.
BUSY GOURMET – meets on the third Monday evening each month to share a potluck style dinner based on themes set by rotating hostesses. These meetings are a time to enjoy food, conversation, fun, and fellowship.
CHICK FLICKS – meets on the fourth Thursday evening of every month to socialize and enjoy a chick flick in good company at Hycroft. This group often shares dinner in advance of the movie showing.
CINEPHILES – UWCV film enthusiasts meet off-site to enjoy a movie on the last Tuesday evening of the month.
CLUB CONNECTIONS – meets alternate weekdays during the last week of each month. This is where members meet to make – and deepen – connections with other members of the club. A great group for newcomers to Hycroft, members usually enjoy dinner, participate in some ice-breaker and connection-building activities, hear from a featured member about her story or area of expertise (no sales pitches), and participate in small group discussions on life experiences, triumphs, and challenges.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH – a group for members wanting to enhance and support the awareness amongst Club members on local issues and to develop and implement service projects to support people in the Vancouver area.
CRAFTS – meets every Wednesday to work on personal craft projects of your choice. Occasional workshops and group projects are held throughout the year.
DANCE S.T.A.R.S. – held each Wednesday from 5:30 – 6:45 pm in the ballroom. Learn new approaches to dance with our instructor’s “Sophisticated Timing And Rhythmic Sequences” and up-tempo popular music. Members regularly attend (often in coordinated “Hycroft Dance” outfits) various dance events at Hycroft and around the city to try out jazz, swing and latin dance steps learned. No partner required. Sign-up for ongoing sessions is on a monthly basis with advance payment of fees to cover the cost of the instructor (drop-in is available subject to space).
SHALL WE DANCE – INTERMEDIATE BALLROOM – meets on Wednesday evenings to dance in our beautiful ballroom from 7 – 9 pm. Led by a professional dance instructor members bring a partner to learn international styles of ballroom routines and techniques. September – June the focus is to learn/master step sequences for a different dance each month, with ‘practice & review’ sessions taking place in July and August. Members also enjoy attending dinner and dance events at Hycroft and other local venues throughout the year.
FEMMES DU FROMAGE – meets on the fourth Tuesday evening of the month at 6 pm to enjoy a sampling of a variety of cheeses paired with beverages and accompanied by salads to round out a meal at an average cost of $32 per event. Volunteer presenters take turns to guide our discovery and enjoyment of a region or varietal theme of cheeses from around the world.
FINANCIAL LITERACY – meets every second and fourth Monday of the month from 1:30- 3:00 pm to discuss a wide range of financial topics. This group is well suited for members who are interested in learning anything about capital markets and tax strategies. Every member has the opportunity to ask questions or voice their opinions or make comments in a casual and lively format. Experts in financial areas such as tax accountants, investment advisors, insurance professionals or bankers are also invited to speak at meetings at least once a month.
FITNESS GROUPS – $10 per class
EASE INTO FITNESS – meets in the ballroom on Wednesdays from 10:30 am – 11:30 am for a gentle fitness class where members can exercise at their own pace. Led by at BCRPA fitness instructor, this group is perfect for those who are easing back into fitness or just trying to get fit for the first time.
TUESDAYS – meets in the morning for 75 minutes for an invigorating workout incorporating yoga and simple dance routines.
FRIDAYS – meets in the morning for 60 minutes for a low impact class featuring music and a varied program of warm-up, flexibility, cardio, balance, and relaxation.
FRENCH CONVERSATION GROUPS
TUESDAY FRENCH – an introductory course that meets weekly at 10 am. Participants are a mix of beginners and advanced speakers who wish to review material or to gain confidence in the French language in a supportive environment. Members to learn basic French and have fun being exposed to French culture through movies, music, and cooking and often gather for lunch in the Dining Room after class.
THURSDAY FRENCH – meets at 10:30 am for informal conversations covering a wide range of topics. While a basic knowledge of French is an asset, this group is welcome to members at all levels of French-speaking ability. Led by a member mentor, participants have the opportunity to different activities such as video clips, songs, crossword puzzles and short articles.
GOLF GROUP – open to UWCV members and their guests who have a range of golfing skills, and who enjoy playing a casual game at a variety of courses. This group meets on Monday mornings at Country Meadows Golf Course in Richmond from Spring to Fall.
HYCROFT PAINTERS – open to all members who enjoy creating art. This group meets weekly on Tuesday and Friday afternoons between 1:30 and 5:00 to paint in the Coach House using a variety mediums including watercolour, acrylic, and oil. Members bring our own supplies and work on individual projects but share fellowship and fun as they encourage each other in their work.
HYCROFT SINGERS – members meet on Tuesday afternoons to rehearse choral music for appearances at Christmas at Hycroft, club events, and other command performances throughout the year. Led by musical director Kevin Zakresky the Hycroft singers have an extensive range of interest from medieval carols to Broadway ballads.
ISSUES CAFÉ – meets on the fourth Monday evening of the month September to June to engage in a variety of discussion topics that are both specific and current. This group is set and moderated by rotating hostesses and often begins with socializing followed by a presentation with moderated discussion and summary. The conversation is often continued over dinner at the Club.
UWCV KNITTERS – members meet on the second and fourth Thursday morning of the month to knit, crochet, felt, quilt, sew, or work on a fiber art of your choosing. This casual, friendly group often creates pieces for sale at Christmas at Hycroft.
MAHJONG GROUP– meets every Thursday at 12:15 pm to enjoy friendly competition. Instruction available.
MEDITATION and RELAXATION – meets each Friday morning at 10 am for a guided meditation session.
MILLENNIALS – open to members aged 40 and under. Members meet regularly to share interests and participate in monthly activities including brunches, movie nights, dinners, game nights and more.
WRITERS GROUP – meets weekly on Monday mornings at 9:45 am to discuss writing technique, write to prompts, share our work and provide feedback to one another. Members are inspired and instructed by presentations from guest speakers and other UWCV members who are published.
PLAY READING – meets on the second and fourth Friday of each month at 10:30 am to read an eclectic mix of both comedies and tragedies available in play-sets from the VPL. No great acting skill is required – just the desire to read a good play and sometimes discuss the issues that arise.
SCRABBLE – meets on the third Sunday of every month at 1:30 pm. This group is open to new and experienced members at any level of love for the game of Scrabble.
TEXAS HOLD’EM POKER – meets at 6 pm on the second Tuesday of each month for a fun and casual game using chips, usually accompanied by pizza dinner. Beginners and experienced players welcome.
TRAVEL – meets on a monthly basis to share some travel experiences, photos, souvenirs, and learn from speakers, writers, and photographers. Members discuss appreciation for gardens, social media skills, travel planning, and more. Meetings alternate between daytime and evening depending on preferences.
WHISKEY WOMEN – meets on the first Tuesday of the month, to taste new whiskeys, learn the art of nosing and tasting, share dinner and have fun. Tastings are $15 (cash) to cover the cost of the whiskey, with food expenses billed to members accounts.
WINE APPRECIATION – meets on third Thursday evenings of every month at 6 pm to share wines, food, and good company. Members take turns presenting and occasionally we have guest presenters or travel off-site for wine events. The cost of the wine tasting varies at each event and is shared by attendees while food costs are billed to the members’ accounts.
